Inspired by the natural world, especially birds, their feathers, feet and flight patterns, Joan aims to produce reminders of the essence of the bird or scene – rough sketches and “quirky” birds, rather than representational illustrations.
In recent years, she has used traditional materials and techniques in a freestyle manner and on a variety of backgrounds. Experiments with dyes and paints for the backgrounds and with a variety of scales and fabric manipulation to increase texture have challenged her to extend the variety of her work. This has recently extended into work on various types of paper and mixed media. Her chief enjoyment remains hand stitching, but she often combines this with other techniques.
Joan has sewn and embroidered since childhood, with her interest reactivated when she discovered creative embroidery in the 1980s. Initially a relaxing change from her demanding career as a chartered secretary, textile art is now a major interest in a busy retirement.

Exhibitions
Joan exhibits regularly with Phoenix, Kingston Stitchers and Ramster Embroidery and Textile Art. In the past she also exhibited with Wey Valley Workshop, WSTA,Cobham Art Group and the Kingston and District Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild.
