profile

Bobbie has been engaged in the creative arts since childhood, both as a musician and contemporary artist. Upon completion of her City and Guilds Diploma she was invited to take responsibility for the Stitched Textiles Levels 1-3 courses at Missenden Abbey, then part of Bucks Adult Education, followed by the creation and delivery of advanced design courses at Missenden School of Creative Arts. Since then she has continued to teach design to students of all levels both in the UK and Europe.

Inspired by the practice of Janet Edmonds, Clare Benn, Michael Brennand-Wood and many others, Bobbie attended Studio 11, Committed to Cloth, West Dean College and the Royal College of Art, committed to her own continued professional development.

Bobbie’s practice explores the space between seeing and understanding. Through drawing, printmaking, photography and material processes, she creates works that invite recognition whilst resisting fixed interpretation. She is interested in the sensation that meaning is present but remains just beyond reach.

Rather than presenting a clear narrative or image, her work offers fragments, traces, structures and disruptions that encourage viewers to actively search for connections. Familiar forms emerge and recede, creating moments where understanding feels close at hand but never fully arrives. This tension between recognition and uncertainty is central to her practice. Underlying her practice is a fascination with our instinct to search for patterns and construct narratives from incomplete information, even when certainty remains elusive.

Her recent work combines intuitive and systematic processes, often layering, obscuring, manipulating and transforming materials to generate visual relationships that remain open to interpretation. She is interested in how viewers construct meaning from what they encounter and how perception shifts as they move between certainty and doubt. The work creates a space for sustained looking, where the act of searching becomes as significant as any final resolution.
