Patti Taylor is a textile artist, printmaker and bookbinder living in London. She began her artistic studies on her retirement, having previously been an IT consultant and teacher/teacher trainer. She studied on the two-year Citylit Fine Art course, then branched out into bookbinding, extended drawing and Advanced Printmaking. Extensive studies with textile artist Louise Baldwin, again at CityLit, concluded with the two-year Advanced Textiles course. Keen to develop her skills, she still finds ad hoc workshops and courses.
Her work takes in a range of media and formats: traditional wall hangings, textile and mixed media books and 3D structures, always seeking a correspondence between the subject matter, its underpinning philosophy and the form of the material. Emotional attachment is key to her practice: capturing her responses to other artworks or images, a line of poetry, a long-forgotten memory or tenuous connection she explores the feelings experienced, usually in the form of a narrative. Using her skills in bookmaking and printmaking, she often records this journey in small notebooks to retain the research which is integral to her process; these artists’ books can become significant artefacts in themselves.
Exhibitions and collections
Patti has work held in the permanent collection at the Scarborough Museums Trust (Printmakers’ Council), and the Victoria & Albert Museum’s textile collection (collaborative artwork: Sewn Antidote 2020). She has participated in group shows at CityLit Gallery, R K Burt, Espacio Gallery, London Print Studio, Whitehouse Arts (Cambridge), Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, Fox Yard Studio, The Art Pavilion, Open Gallery, 54 The Gallery, House of Smalls, Badger in the Wall Gallery, Fronteer Gallery, Holborn Library, J/M Gallery, Queen Street Gallery, and as part of the National Brain Appeal’s annual show. In 2020 her textile book, Spurn, was shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, in 2021 her print book, Mind the Gap, was selected, and in 2024 her textile and print book, Liminal 2, was also selected.
She is a member of PRISM, textiles2020, the Society of Bookbinders, Designer Bookbinders, the Printmakers Council, and London Artists’ Books.
